Trying to beat the rain,
Friendly stranger's greeting,
We wish her luck and
Welcome its arrival
A few plump drops on forest
Red brick pathways glistening
Lethargy erased.
Rain quickens, multiplies
There's a quirky cabin!
Might we make it ours,
This house, this verdant land?
Trade quake for hurricane?
Streets flood bounteously
Perception enhanced.
Onward past fraternities
T-shirts soaked clear through
Skin awake beneath
School year starts its journey
Déjà vu three decades
Weary steps regain their spring
In summer storm.
I don't write much free verse, but this 2008 summer vacation inspired not one but two free verse poems: The "Awakening" was in Chapel Hill, NC. The other free verse poem is Capitol, inspired by a visit to Austin, TX.
